Executive Leadership Training – Do you need new words…or the attitude and presence of a leader?
Qualified people who rise through the ranks -
Know what to do but may not know how to motivate others to do it

Know technical skills but may need help with tact and diplomacy

May not communicate with confidence and strength
Want executive leadership training so they to look and act like the leaders they are

The higher up you go, the less authentic feedback you hear about how you are perceived

Write your talks using a step by step formula:

Who are you addressing? Board? Staff? All leadership? Mixed group?

What do you want them to do when you finish talking?

What are three main points that would persuade them to do this?
Open with an example of success with this type of thing in the past (or failure with the need to not repeat), a rhetorical question, or what you have just noticed going on
Remind them of the benefit to the company, their department and to them personally to do what you are suggesting

Close with the same example, question or situation or better yet, improve your close by ending with the reasons you anticipate success.

Get Help

Get someone outside of the office to give you honest, unbiased advice, help with the writing and train you to speak like the leader you are.

Close the door of the office and rehearse

Rehearsal

Rehearse five minute portions at a time. What executive has 15 minutes available to rehearse their 15 minute talk?

Reading your notes is not rehearsal. You must practice aloud.

If someone else writes you talks, have them create outline notes with few words on them. This forces you to talk and not read to listeners.

Close the door to your office and rehearse exactly as you will speak in the actual meeting or conference call/teleconference

The first time through will be rough. Better to do it in rehearsal and not in the actual meeting.

Do not read PowerPoint screens to listeners. This alone would be a reason they want you to take executive leadership training.

If you are being groomed for leadership, “Executive Leadership Training” may be a subtle way of saying that you are not connecting with people.

What else helps you to connect with listeners?

Pause after saying something important to give them time to absorb it. Be willing to be silent.

Smile when you give good news. Matching your face to the content is underestimated.

In person meetings – be sure to look at each person’s eyes, although not in order one after another

Teleconferences – speak much slower than usual, articulate much more clearly. Help them to want to listen to you and not do email.

In person meetings – be sure to look at each person’s eyes, although not in order one after another

An executive speech does not begin with the agenda slide. It opens with a story, example, analogy or quotation. It pulls people in to listen to the rest of the message.

Observe your peers and notice the one who exude leadership use these skills. You do not have to feel confident to appear confident

Get training You obviously are doing the best you can. Get executive training in communication skills, just as you would get trained to improve your golf game.
