ESL Professional’s Public Speaking

Want to stop, “Would you repeat that, please?”

Easy!

  1. Articulate each word completely, especially the final consonants. Record yourself speaking at work. Is each word articulated fully? Ask a friend to listen and highlight words you could improve. Why? I applaud you for speaking multiple languages and know you can fine-tune this one.

  2. Speak much slower than you want to! Your mind gives you ideas 4-times faster than you should speak. Note: I don’t like to speak slower, either, but I do so listeners can absorb my ideas better.

  3. Are your children correcting your pronunciation? Ask them to coach you on One Word at a time: make it a game to use that word with them for 2 days. Make it Fun, not criticizing. This is good for you and great for building their self-esteem by teaching something they know with their parent.

  4. Are you good at your job? Don’t let pronunciation delay your success.
